No type of telescope has affected amateur astronomy so radically as the Dobsonian telescope. Before the introduction of this type of telescope by John Dobson, the vast majority of amateur telescopes were small refractors in flimsy mounts - barely good enough to show the polar regions of Mars or the rings of Saturn. Larger telescopes, such as Schmidt-Cassegrain telescopes, were reserved for the relatively small group of amateurs who could afford them. The ingenious combination of a simple - but effective - mechanic with maximum aperture has led to a worldwide victory for this concept. The construction is optimized for maximum stiffness with minimum mass. The combination of large height wheels with an optimized aluminum sandwich construction allows small movements even at high magnifications. The focuser position is already positioned to accept our coma corrector. The ideal "workhorse" for deep-sky observers.
